Biography:
At the age of 15, Polly saw Pablo Picasso's Guernica at MOMA. It left an indelible mark. That was the point when she realized the emotive power of art.
Years later Polly worked as a graphic designer in Chicago. She studied design and animation in the Czech Republic and attended graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth for visual communication. The dark humor of Czech puppetry, writing, and poster design shape the tone of her work. A surrealist slip casting workshop fueled her passion for ceramics and mold making. A residency at Medalta Historic Clay Center and a workshop at Corning provided the time for her to incorporate not only mold making, but glass casting into her process.
Cast toys, found objects and 3d prints combine to reveal visual and verbal narratives which are inscribed onto the object surfaces using a process of inscription called sgraffito. Polly uses tools to scratch through surface color exposing the base clay. When there is no place left to apply anything, and she has scratched until she can’t scratch anymore, the piece is finished.
